On Friday, Mama Matrix made their first trip to Sheffield’s O2 Academy to support The Beat on their 30th Anniversary Tour. As the room filled up with ‘Rude Boys’ Mama Matrix took to the stage and Sheffield welcomed them with open arms as they were treated to favourites like Destroyer and Irene. They soon had the crowd dancing to their unique songs written about everything from spanking, magic mushrooms and anxiety, and were even asked back for an encore. Ranking Roger himself added “Mama Matrix are great at what they do. They have really got it down.”
In this time of economic crisis it seems fitting that The Beat are touring again. Their songs were the soundtrack to the recession of the early 80’s and haven’t lost their appeal. Their diverse mix of fans were not disappointed as the band belted out hits like ‘Mirror in the Bathroom’, ‘Hands off…She’s Mine’ and ‘Nice To Talk to’. They even managed to bring things right up to-date with Ranking Jr’s rhymes and a new energy that was infectious. If you missed the gig on Friday The Beat are playing around the UK between March and July.
News has been rife around Birmingham over the last week or so regarding the noise troubles at The Rainbow in Digbeth. Here at CID Music we have been reminiscing about the good times we had there in 2008. Our particular favourite was the event we put on in November. For those of you who joined us, feel free to reminisce too. For those of you who missed it, take a look at Smileymic (and other archive posts) to see what you missed out on.
